A private collection of paintings by the famed 19th century German artist Richard Lorenz will be displayed August 28-October 13 in the season opening show at the Concordia University Wisconsin art gallery. An opening reception will be held Thursday, September 14 from 6-8 p.m. in the gallery, 12800 North Lake Shore Drive, Mequon.

Lorenz was born in Germany in 1858 before immigrating to Milwaukee in 1886 as a painter for the panorama painting industry. He developed a national reputation as an equestrian specialist and became known for capturing scenes during the American Civil War.

“The Lorenz exhibition is an excellent source for Wisconsin historical artists,” noted Dr. Theresa Kenney, professor and art gallery curator. “Our students are excited to bring this show on campus and will act as docents and help hang the exhibit,” she continued. The gallery is free and open to the public Monday-Thursday from 4-8 p.m. and Fridays and Sundays from 12-4 p.m.

When Lorenz wasn’t painting in the western plains, he was a teacher in the Milwaukee art community until 1915. His plein air style paintings have been displayed throughout the United States and Europe, and his works are recognized for capturing the solitude and vastness of remote locations accessible only by horseback.

This exhibition is being presented in collaboration with the Cedarburg Art Museum and through the generous financial support of the Washington House Inn, Cedarburg.
